The Rods
![]() |
February 2008 - Just finished. I've worked for the past year to develop a 7' 3 wt rod taper and it's finally done. Like the other rods in the Double A Series, it's a delicate rod, but has lots of backbone. So after many years of tedious empirically designed tapers (lots of planing and begrudgingly disposing of blanks), the Double A line is complete 8' 5 wt, 7'6" 5 wt, 7'6" 4 wt, and now a 7' 3 wt. What else could one need? Wait, don't answer that.
ADH Rods crafts original/unique tapers designed by the crafter, a fly fisherman and guide, and a field staff of bamboo enthusiasts and guides from Spruce Creek Outfitters. The rods were created to excel in the myriad of fishing situations encountered while fishing for trout in the small to medium sized streams found in Central Pennsylvania. They load and cast effortlessly: characteristics difficult to create with any other material, natural or man made.
The rods can cast short, medium, and long distances with minimal effort, but also have fine tips to protect light tippets and small flies. Not an easy combination to produce. There are currently four Double A rods in production. Each are three piece rods and include two tips. The 7'6" 5 weight Double A is powerful to enable long casts accurately. It is best suited for a size 10 Green Drake down to a size 26 Trico, but can also cast terrestrials, streamers, and typical nymphing duties. The 7'6" 4 weight Double A is a lighter version that has a slightly slower tempo when casting and can present flies more delicately. It is intended to fish size 14 Sulphurs and also down to size 26 Tricos. The 8' 5 weight Double A is an all around rod which is slightly more full flexing than the 7'6" model of the same weight. With approximately two years in development of this taper, we believe this rod is the quintessential 8' 5 weight bamboo rod with super-smooth action. And finally a 7' 3 weight. The perfect small stream rod with the finest tips, but plenty of backbone to punch out long casts to those spooky Brookies.
Each rod includes a handmade rod bag (by Aaron’s mother, Marsha Frye
Hartman, an accomplished quilter) which has a loop for hanging the rod after
fishing and a ferrule plug pocket with a bamboo button closure. A black aluminum
tube with brass end caps and bamboo ferrule plugs made from the same bamboo
as the rod are included.
Where to Purchase

which time a delivery time will be given. ADH Rods does not keep a stock of
